Siemens delivers power substations to observatory in Chile

2017-1-27

Siemens has received a €1.2 million order from ESO (European Southern Observatory) in Chile to supply and install three container substations.

These compact stations will be equipped with dry-type transformers, medium-voltage switchgear, low-voltage switchgear, and secondary systems, and will ensure a reliable power supply to the Very Large Telescope (VLT) array and other telescopes, the manufacturer said in a press statement.

The VLT is part of the Paranal Observatory situated on the 2,600 m Cerro Paranal mountain in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, the flagship facility for European ground-based astronomy, and it is the world's most advanced optical instrument.
