Rwanda Energy Group (REG) has started upgrading power stations supplying electricity in various areas in the country aiming to ensure efficient power supply.

The revamp activities started at Mukungwa hydro-power plant where a power transformer is being upgraded from 5 MVA to 15 MVA to resolve overloading issues, reports The New Times.

The recently appointed chief executive of REG, Ron Weiss, said that at some substations equipment is old and overloaded, resulting in unreliable energy supply.

There are 22 power stations countrywide and the project will also include the construction of a new Nyabihu substation.
