Hitachi Energy supplies transformers and reactors to TenneT's transmission grid development program

The strategic partnership will accelerate the energy transition with high-performing and sustainable equipment to modernize, boost capacity, and enhance grid stability.

Hitachi Energy has signed a framework agreement1 with TenneT to supply power transformers and shunt reactors – the key components to enhance the power grid's stability, reliability, and resilience – for their transmission grid development program in Germany. TenneT is a leading European cross-border Transmission System Operator (TSO) in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany, with multiple interconnectors to neighboring countries.

TenneT owns and operates over 25,000 km of high-voltage lines and cables and delivers electricity to 43 million domestic and business users. They are now modernizing their infrastructure to meet the growing electricity demand associated with the energy transition.

“To enable the integration of renewable energies into the transmission grid via the distribution grid, we need a significant number of new high-performance transformers. With today's signing of the framework contract, we enable the construction and modernization of our substations. This investment is crucial for ensuring sustainable electricity supply in Germany and the Netherlands", said Tim Meyerjürgens, COO of TenneT.

Hitachi Energy will supply power transformers and shunt reactors for the German part of the program, a significant share of the total investment. They will be produced in Europe leveraging Hitachi Energy's wide design, production, and service footprint with facilities within European countries.

Using fossil-free electricity in our manufacturing premises and low-carbon emission materials will improve the transformers and reactors' overall sustainability performance, contributing to the responsible use of natural resources.

The agreement is another important milestone of Hitachi Energy and TenneT's strategic partnership, resulting in new ways of accelerating the energy transition through impactful programs. Just to cite an example, the 2 GW offshore wind project in coastal Germany and the Nether-lands is ongoing, with Hitachi Energy pioneering high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology to contribute to the world's most ambitious offshore wind initiative with multiple offshore and on-shore HVDC converter stations2.
