ABB wins $30 million order to increase Norway’s grid capacity

2015-8-20

ABB transformer technology supports Norway’s push to increase the volume of clean energy it can transport reliably over its grid using existing transmission corridors

Zurich, Switzerland, July 27, 2015 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $30 million from Norwegian transmission system operator Statnett SF to supply power transformers that will help to significantly increase the capacity of the country’s central power grid, bolstering its energy security and ability to transmit more renewable energy. The order was booked in the second quarter of 2015.

The order for nine transformers was booked in the second quarter of 2015. This includes seven 1,000 megavolt ampere (MVA) 420/300 kilovolt (kV) autotransformers and two 300 MVA 420/132 kV power transformers.

The transformers will help increase transmission capacity of Norway
ʼs main grid and ensure a stable power supply. They will also support the integration of more renewable energy, helping Norway achieve climate targets while delivering clean energy within the country and to the rest of Europe.

“We are pleased that ABB
ʼs state-of-the-art transformer technology was chosen to support a major upgrade of Norwayʼs main transmission grid,” said Bernhard Jucker, President of ABB’s Power Products division. “As part of our Next Level strategy, ABB is committed to supporting the integration of renewables and the sustainable development of power infrastructure.”

As part of one of the world’s largest projects of its kind, Statnett is upgrading the voltage of Norway’s main grid from 300 to 420 kV by converting existing 300 kV power lines and substations or by replacing old low-capacity lines with new, higher-capacity lines. Utilizing existing transmission corridors is an environmentally friendly, cost-effective solution to increase grid capacity and reduce losses with little impact on the landscape.

ABB offers a complete range of power and distribution transformers designed for reliability, durability and efficiency. ABB is a major transformer manufacturer throughout the world and offers both liquid-filled and dry-type transformers as well as services for complete lifecycle support, including replacement parts and components.
