ABB plans cuts at its Brilon dry transformer plant
2015-7-15 Radio Sauerland
Germany, Brilon: ABB is planning to cut up to 60 jobs at its transformer plant in Brilon, Germany and move part of its production to Poland, according to the German daily Westfalenpost.
Although there was no confirmation of this figure from ABB headquarters in Mannheim, they did reveal that a total of 100 to 120 jobs will be cut at its sites in Germany, Spain and Switzerland, which means that German workers might be significantly affected by the planned reductions, reports Radio Radio Sauerland.
ABB’s spokeswoman in Mannheim, Beate Höger, explained that restructuring and a shift of production capacity to Poland was inevitable to keep the Brilon plant competitive in what has become an over-capacitated dry transformers market.
In 2012, ABB invested $30 million in the extension of its Lodz plant in Poland o accommodate the production of transformer components.
