Second 500 MVA transformer energised at Ngwedi substation

 South Africa: Eskom has energised and commissioned the second 500 MVA power transformer at the newly built Ngwedi substation in North West, bringing the total transformational capacity to 1,000 MVA.

This will provide improved flexibility and reliability of the network in South Africa’s platinum belt – the greater Rustenburg area.

This second transformer marks a significant step towards the completion of the Medupi Power Station Integration Project. The first of the two transformers was commissioned in December 2016, the utility company said in a press statement.

Phase 2 of Medupi integration comprises the construction of two substations, Ngwedi in North West and Borutho in Limpopo, as well as the construction of transmission lines from Medupi Power Station to both substations, which will be interlinked with the rest of the grid, consisting of approximately 732 km of high-voltage transmission lines and an additional 2,000 MVA of transformation capacity.
