SaskPower investing $82.5M over summer to upgrade power grid

 Canada, Saskatchewan: SaskPower will be spending $82.5 million (CAD108 million) in the coming months to upgrade the provincial power grid in order to decrease the number of unplanned power outages, one third of which are the result of aging infrastructure.

As part of the upgrade of SaskPower’s infrastructure, most of which was built in the 1950s and 1960s, over the summer months SaskPower will bereplacing transformers in Regina and Saskatoon, upgrading underground power cables and building a new major transmission line serving Saskatoon, reports Regina Leader Post.

“As the demand for power keeps growing, we not only need to build the grid, but we need to tend to our old poles, transformers and stations. We’re investing around a $1 billion annually to make sure homes, farms and businesses have the power they need, when they need it,” said SaskPower president and CEO Mike Marsh.
