Meridian to replace faulty Manapouri transformers

 New Zealand, Southland: Meridian Energy, a New Zealand state-owned electricity company, is replacing two of its power transformers at the underground Manapouri power station after finding a fault with cooling units.

The failure of the coolers meant that the tubes winding around the two affected transformers were contaminated with a small amount of metal particles, reports The New Zealand Herald.

"The problems with the coolers were detected early enough and action taken before an electrical fault occurred that could have resulted in a transformer fire," the company spokesman said.

Meridian is looking to buy a third transformer so that it has a spare unit available if required in the future. The total cost to replace each transformer, including design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning will come at about $2.2 million.
