Kenya receives $195M financing for Last Mile power project

 Kenya, Nairobi: Kenya’s National Treasury has signed a 180 million euro ($195 million) financial package with various agencies for the completion of the third phase of the Last Mile Connectivity project, which seeks to increase access to electricity across the country.

The project involves the extension of the low-voltage network to reach households located within 600 metres of a transformer. About 5,320 transformers were installed in 47 counties during the implementation of the first phase of the project, which began in September 2015, reports Mediamax.

The next phase of the project includes installation of new transformers and extension of low voltage network to reach additional 500,000 customers, thereby adding 2.5 million Kenyans to the power grid.

The project is expected to connect over 70 per cent of Kenyan households by the end of this year.
