Juno freezes Nantucket substation

2015-3-19

USA, Massachusetts: Winter storm Juno has left the entire Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, without electricity due to severe icing at a downtown substation and numerous downed lines and blown power transformers.

Strong winds washed over the substation with freezing salt water and spray and caused a number of transformer fires, resulting in power outages to the population of over 10,000 islanders, reports The Inquirer and Mirror.

National Grid specialists work hard to thaw out the substation, but strong winds hamper the line crews in their efforts to repair transformers.
