India to start pilot project for specialised steel manufacturing

2016-5-10

India: As part of the Make in India strategy, Inida’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government may shortly decide on setting up the country’s pilot research and development project for specialised electrical steel used for manufacturing transformers.

India’s ministry of steel may finally decide upon the production of cold-rolled grain oriented (CRGO) steel, for which India currently does not have capability and is dependent on imports, reports VC Circle.

According to the source, the ministry of steel held a meeting to discuss this issue with other stakeholders in the $75 million pilot project, including Tata Steel Ltd, state-owned Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), and National Metallurgical Ltd (NML).

A draft detailed project report (DPR) has been reported to be submitted and the final approval now rests with the steel ministry.

The demand for transformers in India is expected to increase with the government’s plan to provide power to around 280 million people that do not have access to electricity.
