2016-5-4

Gambia: Gambia’s National Assembly has ratified the Multinational Loan Agreement between the Republic of the Gambia and the African Development Fund on The Gambia River Basin Development Organisation Energy Project, which includes construction of a hydro-electricity dam on the River Gambia and associated infrastructure for the evacuation of energy to four neighbouring countries.

Development of the 128 MW Sambangalou hydro-electricity dam on the River Gambia in Senegal will also include the construction of an interconnectionnetwork for the evacuation of energy to four countries, comprising 15 high voltage/medium voltage transformer stations, 1,677 km of 225 kV transmission lines, and two load dispatch centres for managing energy movements, reports Daily Observer.

This project seeks to promote sharing of energy and improvement of the quality of electricity supply in The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau and Senegal.

The Financing Agreement for the project was signed between the government of The Gambia and the African Development Bank in December 2015 as co-financing instrument for The Gambia’s contribution to the project.
