USA, Georgia: GE’s Digital Energy business has announced an expansion to its PROLEC-GE Solar Pad-Mounted Transformer portfolio with a new three-phase unit.

The new solar unit is designed to extend scope capabilities from 2 MVA to 2.8 MVA for dual low-voltage winding and from 3 MVA to 4 MVA for single low-voltage winding, reports Penn Energy.

“For the solar industry, it’s no easy task to calculate the optimal capacity needed for a transformer, especially since the energy generated will vary throughout the day,” said Rosario Lopez, vice president of PROLEC-GE’s Distribution Transformers business.

Featuring increased dependability and a robust design, the new transformers have a special low-loss design option, helping to reduce the total cost of ownership, as well as optional arc-flash protection which helps to minimize infrastructure damage and potential health risks for maintenance crews.

The unit has recently passed IEEE/ANSI short-circuit testing and it meets Underwriters Laboratories, International Building Code, Canadian Standards Association and seismic design certifications.
