ABB downsizes dry transformer production in Spain
2015-7-16 El Periódico de Aragón
Spain, Aragon: As of September this year, ABB will downsize transformer production at its manufacturing plant in Zaragoza and move part of the production to Poland.
Once designated a “Focus Factory” for the manufacture of dry transformers in Europe, the plant employing 222 workers will be subjected to severe downsizing and labour cuts, the size of which is still unknown, reports El Periódico de Aragón.
As the plant management revealed its intentions in late May, it was initially announced that the labour adjustment would affect 25 employees. However, many more lay-offs had been announced in the meantime, according to El Periódico de Aragón.
With the future of the plant undisclosed and no official comment from ABB, fears remain that the production at the plant might be closed permanently, similarly to the destiny of the ABB motor and generator plant in Sant Quirze del Vallés, Barcelona, where after initial downsizing the plant stopped producing engines in 2013, transferring its entire production to Sweden.
