ABB contributes to reliable power supply at 2014 APEC Summit

2014-11-19

The 22nd Informal Leadership Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), opened in Huairou District, Beijing today. This is the first time the Summit returns to China in 13 years after it was held in Shanghai in 2001.

With efficient and reliable power products and technologies, ABB actively participated in the construction of new substation projects of the State Grid Corporation of China in the Huairou District, and provided low-voltage power distribution solutions to the 2014 APEC Summit venues, to help ensure reliable power supply for the Summit.

At the newly built 110-kilovolt substation in Conference Town and a switching station in Yanxi Lake, ABB provided oil - immersed power transformers, metal-clad switchgears, medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgears (GIS), and capacitors, as well as other electrical equipment. Featuring excellent short circuit resistant performance, overload capacity, and low loss, these products effectively support the construction of a reliable power network for the summit. One of the products is the ZS-SG Metal-clad switchgear, which is a type of indoor medium-voltage switchgear developed by ABB especially for China’s power system. The product can achieve 110 percent full-load operation, and has high reliability.

In a bid to improve the safety and reliability of the power supply at the main site of the 2014 APEC Summit, ABB also tailor made a low-voltage power distribution solution consisting of different types of circuit breakers, surge protective devices and switch-disconnectors. The S200 Miniature Circuit Breaker, for example, provides overload and short-circuit protection for distribution circuits at different currents to ensure the safety and reliability of operations. Its unique structural design makes cable connection easier and quicker. The product can effectively avoid construction accidents caused by connection errors, thus comprehensively enhancing the safety of the power supply for the 2014 APEC Summit venues.

Dr. Gu Chunyuan, head of ABB North Asia Region, Chairman and President of ABB (China) Limited, said: “We are very honored to support the 2014 APEC Summit by providing power technologies to its main venue. This further demonstrates the active role that ABB has been playing in helping build China for many years. Looking forward, ABB will work closely with our local partners to support the country's Next Level of economic development and to fulfill our commitment to achieving 'Power and productivity for a better world'."

ABB’s leading power and automation technology and solutions have also been extensively deployed in landmark construction projects in Beijing, the host city of the 2014 APEC Summit. Some notable projects include the "Bird's Nest" National Stadium, Great Hall of the People, Grand National Theatre, Beijing Capital International Airport, Beijing South Railway Station, Phase 3 of the World Trade Tower, and Beijing Yintai Center, reflecting ABB’s positive contribution to the development of the capital city of China.
