ABB Powering Istanbul's newest and longest metro line

ABB power products have been selected to electrify the traction and power distribution systems for Istanbul's newest and longest metro line. With eight cars passing in each direction through 16 stations every 1.5 minutes, the demands on reliability are huge. Only ABB equipment could meet the challenge.
ABB was selected by metro line contractor Avrasya Metro Group (AMG) to provide an electrification solution for the traction and power distribution systems in the new Kadikoy-Kartal metro line, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in late 2011.
The solution consists of 176 UniGear medium-voltage switchgear panels and 86 distribution and hi T Plus transformers, which were singled out by both AMG and the end user, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, for the products' outstanding reliability and performance record in similar rail and metro projects worldwide.
The Kadikoy-Kartal metro line is one of the most important ongoing infrastructure projects in Istanbul, a megacity of 13 million people that is home to 20 percent of Turkey's population and which generates almost one-third of the country's gross domestic product.
The line will run on the Anatolian side of the city and link up with the Marmaray rail tunnel under the Bosporus strait, which will be the first rail link to connect the European and Asian sides of the city.

The Kadikoy-Kartal metro line will ease traffic congestion, improve mobility and cut carbon dioxide emissions in the world's fifth largest city proper.
With 16 stations, 21.75 kilometers of double track, and eight-car trains passing in each direction every 1.5 minutes and carrying up to one million passengers a day, reliability of the line's power supply is critical to metro operations and public safety.
Underground rail substations are exceptionally demanding environments that require electrical products with unusually high levels of reliability, power quality and safety to ensure that metro services are not disrupted and safety not compromised.

ABB is the world's leading supplier of electrical solutions for the rail industry – both for rail vehicles and rail networks.
The transformers have to withstand strong overloads and harmonics, and the switchgear has to protect the entire traction system and the power distribution system from faults in the power network.
UniGear is the world's biggest selling medium-voltage switchgear. Its modular, robust and compact features with arc protection and segregated compartments for safety have made it first choice for the most demanding environments and applications worldwide.
ABB's hi-T Plus dry type transformers can operate at much higher temperatures (hence, hi-T) and have a longer service life than other vacuum cast coil transformers, thanks to the use of materials with class H thermal insulation (the highest). This enables them to withstand strong overloads, high harmonic distortion and high unforeseen temperatures. They can operate in humid or heavily polluted environments and withstand seismic conditions.
Other urban metro and light rail systems for which ABB has recently provided similar power reliability solutions include London, Delhi, Beijing, Shanghai, Dubai and South Africa's new Gautrain.
