Transformer explosion causes havoc at Nairobi university campus

 Kenya, Nairobi: At least one student has died and more than 100 have been injured in a stampede at Nairobi University after they mistook a power transformer blast for an attack, officials say.

Students jumped from windows at their residence halls or rushed out in a stampede when an electricity transformer exploded at Nairobi university's Kikuyu campus, reports ABC.

An explosion was caused by a power cable which blew up outside the student hostel. The hostel was not affected, but following the attack in Garrisa 10 days ago, the students thought this was another attack.

One student died after jumping from the fifth floor, while 150 students sustained minor injuries and 20 remained in hospital for treatment.
