GE gets DOE funding to design flexible large power transformer

2016-12-5

USA, New York: General Electric in Niskayuna, New York is one beneficiary of a $1.5 million initiative by the Department of Energy to produce large power transformers that are critical to the nation’s power grid.

GE Global Research in Niskayuna will use $358,709 of the DOE funding to design a flexible large power transformer that would better handle different voltage levels and allow adjustments that would make it an easier option for replacing failed transformers, reports The Daily Gazette.

The total project value is listed at $508,663 and GE is one of five entities selected to receive the DOE funding. The initiative is supported by the Transformer Reliance and Advanced Components program, which is part of the DOE’s larger Grid Modernization Initiative.
